V.6.0
AMS cases - CF-1006,
CF-1009
OVERVIEW: Although
we located the AMS cases about a year ago, we've not aggressively marketed
them. Following an extensive search for an 'aluminum case' that has a
satisfactory chassis design for both cooling and modification, the AMS
CF-series cases were selected. Now that we've spent the time sorting out
the appropriate mods for this chassis and the price is at reasonable levels,
we're ready to market it in the storefront and on-line catalog.

We found that by
offering this case design in two heights, AMS provides the capacity for
drives our buyers need: the CF-1006, the short version, provides four
HD mounts in its lower front rack. The taller CF-1009 can hold up to seven
HDs--more than enough capacity for nearly any workstation-type, storage-intensive
use. Its additional height makes it perfect for an office server or workstation
that still fits under a desktop. In a 'modern' office decor, it certainly
looks better than the unbiquitous beige case.
The lower front
design allows easy conversion to a "positive pressure" fan configuration
because of its bezel attachment design, the 5.25 bay lateral location
allows us to install 5.25 drive-column cooling fans on the right side,
and the width overall allows installation of an 80 fan next to the 120
in front and even allows 60mm fans to be installed adjacent to the PCI
slots in back. With its height, the CF-1009 is only the second case we
have found that is capable of installing two 120 fans in the lower front!
As
we experimented further with these two cases, we became more and more
impressed with their cooling performance.
Adding 92 intake fans to the Upper Right side for cooling on the 5.25
column also provides air for power supply exhaust, thus boosting the lower
section performance as well. 43-mm punches on the right side of the 5.25
drive column provides direct air flow between the 5.25 drives. Balancing
intake and exhaust is completed by adding exhaust fans in the backboard
(60s by the PCI slots) or 92 or 120s on the left side- (by the PCI slots).
Using Panaflo Low
and Medium-speed fans in 80s, 92s, and 120s, and JMC's special low speed
120 fan on the CF-1006, intake airflow can range from 85 cfm intake (JMC
120L, P80L1A) to about 144 cfm (adding a P92L1A Upper Right side) at 12
v, and the exhaust can range from about 83 cfm (J120L, PS fan at low speed)
to about 134 cfm (P120L1A in the backboard, P90L1A in the left side, or
two P60H1As in the backboard).
At any level of fan configuration,
a fan controller can be added. Two-, three- and four-pot controllers are
available, and the fans are parallel-wired as needed to provide intake
and exhaust fan control 'zones'. With controls to lower the voltage to
7v, and figuring a flow factor of .5833 (7/12), the same setups can range
from about 50 to 85 cfm intake and 58 to 86 cfm exhaust, and fan motors
are virtually unheard.
The CF-1006--well,
the variations expand geometrically. At the extreme, but still using the
same fans, with a dual 120 lower front and one or two 80s to blow directly
on the motherboard, and a 120 on the upper right--there's an easy 225+
cfm intake at 12v--and with the same 120s in the backboard and left-side
PCI, and P80L1As in the upper back--there's another 198 cfm exhaust (with
a low-speed PS fan). That's about 400 cfm of flow through, using some
of the quietest fans available!
The case design does have its shortcomings--most
notably, these include the lack of an intake filter and the minimal intake
grill design in the lower front. However, the small grill intake is offset
by the full-width 'slot' between the bezel bottom and chassis, and metal
mesh filters can be installed with the intake fan punches. A fixed 3.5
'floppy' cage is not the worst nuisance, for the bays can be filled by
a floppy, memory reader, and a 4-pot controller. A removable motherboard
tray would be wonderful--but builders don't always see that as a mandatory
item.
These shortcomings are more than
made up for by the good cooling performance the case provides in its modified
versions. This performance, combined with the attractive design of the
exterior, makes both versions a worthwhile consideration for buyers wanting
a non-traditional case that can cool well. After more are sold, I suspect
that we will find this case will match Chenbro's fabled GENIE (SR1040x)
for flexibility in configuration and cooling performance.
We currently have a limited amount
of left side windows for the CF1006, and this first load is the standard
'brushed aluminum' color. Our next order will bring in the additional
current color selections.

Modification Packages:
Until we can get a final program design for a decent 'custom
configurator,' we've assembled mods packages into fan configurations that
progress from level 1 to level 4. The packages go like this:
Basic Mods: make
the top removable, offset HD cage to provide 38mm fan clearance. The
Basic Mods can be ordered with any mods level.
CF-1006 MODIFICATIONS
LIST
Mods 1: Punch
the Backboard and Lower front chassis grills, drill mounting holes as
needed, install u-channel trim, overdrill fan mounting holes and install
grommets. The airflow will be both quieter, and the grommets reduce case
harmonic vibration. Airflow improvements are limited to fan selection
for 120 flow.
Mods 2A: Punch
the Backboard and Lower Front chassis grills, and punch an 80 to the right
of the Lower Front 120; drill mounting holes, install u-channel trim,
overdrill fan mounting holes and install grommets. Adding the right-side
80 provides airflow aimed directly at the memory and CPU/Heatsink areas
of the motherboard; this is an excellent approach to top-end CPUs and
Heatsinks, like Xeons.
Mods 2B: Punch
the Backboard and Lower Front chassis grills, and punch a Right Side Upper
92 complete with two 5.25 drive column ventilation punches; drill mounting
holes, install u-channel trim, overdrill fan mounting holes and install
grommets. With the Upper Right mods done, airflow is used for cooling
5.25 drive column devices--burners--and is also disbursed over the motherboard
area.
Mods 3: Punch
the Backboard and Lower Front 120 grills, punch a Lower Front 80, punch
the Right Side Upper 92 and drive column ventilation, and punch one or
two Backboard-PCI 60s; drill mounting holes, install u-channel trim, overdrill
fan mounting holes and install grommets. With the two extra intake fans
installed, one or two backboard 60 fans are added to increase exhaust
flow low in the case. Airflow is generally complete throughout the case,
no matter what drives or cards are installed. This version is intended
for buyers of cases with left-side windows.
Mods 4:
Punch the Backboard and Lower Front grills, punch a Lower Front 80, punch
the Right Side Upper 92 and drive column ventilation; and punch a 92 or
120 fan in the Left Side back by the PCI slots, drill mounting holes,
install u-channel trim, overdrill fan mounting holes and install grommets.
Using a left side exhaust here in the larger fan sizes reduces heat for
ANY card installed, including high-end video, Drive Controllers, or high-end
sound.
CF-1009 MODIFICATIONS
LIST
Mods 1: Punch
the Backboard 120 grill, and punch a dual 120 Lower front mount; drill
mounting holes as needed, install u-channel trim, overdrill fan mounting
holes and install grommets. The airflow will be both quieter, and the
grommets reduce case harmonic vibration. Airflow improvements are limited
to fan selection for the 120 fan speeds and to adding fans to the two
Upper Back 80 fan mounts
Mods 2A: Punch
the Backboard grill, the dual 120 lower front, remove upper back 80 grills,
and punch an 80 to the right of the Lower Front 120; drill mounting holes,
install u-channel trim, overdrill fan mounting holes and install grommets.
Adding the right-side 80 provides airflow aimed directly at the memory
and CPU/Heatsink areas of the motherboard; this is an excellent approach
to top-end CPUs and Heatsinks, like Xeons, as well as for systems running
RAID 5 hard drive configurations
Mods 2B: Punch
the Backboard grill, the dual 120 lower front, remove upper back 80 grills,
and punch a Right Side Upper 120 complete with two 5.25 drive column ventilation
punches; drill mounting holes, install u-channel trim, overdrill fan mounting
holes and install grommets. With the Upper Right mods done, airflow is
used for cooling 5.25 drive column devices--burners--and also feeds the
PSU and Upper Back 80s.
Mods 3: Punch
the Backboard and Lower Front 120 grills, punch a Lower Front 80, punch
the Right Side Upper 120 and drive column ventilation; drill mounting
holes, install u-channel trim, overdrill fan mounting holes and install
grommets. With the two extra intake fans installed, upper back 80s should
be increased to the next speed level. Airflow is generally complete throughout
the case, no matter what drives or cards are installed. If this version
is selected by buyers of cases with left-side windows, additional exhaust
low in the case can be provided by installing one or two 60mm fans in
backboard by the PCI slots.
Mods 4:
Punch the Backboard and Lower Front 120 grills, punch a Lower Front 80,
punch the Right Side Upper 120 and drive column ventilation, and punch
a 92 or 120 fan in the Left Side back by the PCI slots, drill mounting
holes, install u-channel trim, overdrill fan mounting holes and install
grommets. Using a left side exhaust here in the larger fan sizes reduces
heat for ANY card installed, including high-end video, Drive Controllers,
or high-end sound.
Note: This list of available
modifications follows our typical progression for cooling performance
improvement. For more information about our approach to providing
quiet and powerful cooling, click here.

| COMMENTS:
For the barebones buyer, we've put together a configuration that
includes the removable top and the HD cage offset. This 'Mods 2A'
package improves the airflow over the memory and at the CPU and
heatsink directly; cooling them does not rely on the 120 intake
air alone. It's ideal for the buyer who already owns his own PS
and fans and whose fans may include 120x38 models, and who is looking
for additonal motherboard cooling. There is greatly-improved circulation
in the case and it is easier to set up the case for positive pressure.

COMMENTS: This "Mods 2B"
package is for the buyer who wants better 5.25 drive cooling and
still get enhanced airflow over the motherboard in a case with a
factory window. Instead of using an intake fan in the lower front,
a 92 fan mount is punched in the right side by the 5.25 drives,
and two nominal 1&1/2" holes into the drive column mounts
themselves. These changes give you direct airflow between drives,
so cooling the opticals does not rely on conductivity alone. (Aluminum
"conductivity" benefits are a factor only in cases with
the poorest air circulation--if then.) The backboard exhaust is
pumped up by the addition of a 60mm fan near the upper PCI and AGP
slots, thus avoiding any need to worry about cracks in the left
side acrylic window.

COMMENTS: Here's a standard configuration,
all set to go with quiet fans. The intake air flow is about 93 cfm,
and the exhaust is about 83 with a typical low-noise PS fan. Fan
connectors are the standard 4-pin (PS ones). If you want it wired
for super-quiet operation using 7v connections, just tell us that
in the comments section of the e-commerce ordering process. |

| COMMENTS:
This "Mods 2B" package is for the buyer who wants better
5.25 drive cooling and still get enhanced airflow over the motherboard
in a case with or without a factory window. In addition to providing
an intake fan in the right side by the 5.25 drives, we now punch
nominal 1&1/2" holes into the drive column mounts themselves.
These changes give you direct airflow between drives here, not relying
on conductivity alone for heat dissipation.
Setting up this case with the Enermax
'UC" fans lets you tweak the airflow in different parts of
the case--albeit at higher noise levels. However, their low speed
settings are as favorable as Panaflos for noise, and they are a
premium-quality fan.
If you want this case with a left-side
window, just tell us so in the comments field in the e-commerce
ordering, and we'll include it for $20.00 more. (Bear with us until
we get the final ordering configurator up.)

COMMENTS: This one is close to the
whole enchilada: If you need a powerful case holding 4 HDs by your
desk, this one provides the most complete air circulation package
we've sorted out so far--and with quiet fans. With the fans set
to 12 v, this case has about 135 cfm intake and about 134 cfm exhaust.
With the fans set to 7v--done simply by switching the tails to the
included 7v version--the airflow will be reduced to about 160 cfm,
and all you will hear is the white noise of the moving air. This
package is ideal for those of you with the 3.+ P4 packages, or even
a dual Xeon package with the appropriate PSU. About the only thing
to add would be the Basic Mods--i.e., the removable top and HD cage
offset for 38mm-thick fans.
At the time of this writing (early
September, '03) the only better setup would to get it with a fan
controller installed--so if you want that, simply see the controller
packages in the storefront. The controller and fans are completely
installed--all you have to do is install your PS connector to the
controller. At least two four-pot controllers are available, in
different colors. If you use the 3.5 one, you'll still have room
for two more 3.5 external devices--the typical floppy, and a memory
card reader can be fit.

| COMMENTS:
Here's a controller version of the case with a Mods 1setup that
uses Enermax fans and controller. Testing this spring showed this
to be a very flexible setup--when the Enermax fans are manually
set to given speed, the Enermax controller allows you dial the speed
down as well. The components work together perfectly, since they're
both from Enermax.
For a buyer wanting a standard-type
configuration and some flexibility, it really works well--and it
can be used with a left side window easily.
Until all the details for wiring are
sorted out, we're selling the controller packages completely installed.
The fan leads are extended, leads are carefully positioned along
the chassis, out of the way and secured with cable ties on stick-on
bases--and all the leads connected to the controller. Connections
are all soldered joints covered with color-matched heatshrink.

| COMMENTS:
Here's a controller version of the case with a Mods 2B setup--the
second intake fan is the Right-Side Upper 92, and the three case
fans are wired to the a 4-pot controller installed in a 3.5 bay.
At 12v, the intake airflow is about 104 cfm and the exhaust is about
91 (including a low speed PS fan). Dialing it down allows nearly
silent operation, but still with good airflow. The fourth pot on
the controller is available for your use for your CPU HS fan (not
recommended) Video HS fan, case light dimming....
Now you can balance the case for quietness
and good airflow--dial each fan as needed to put the sound or the
airflow as needed for your current use. It's the ultimate in flexibility
for a higher-powered workstation.
Since this version uses no left-side
PCI fans, it can be paired with a left side window. Or, add up to
two more backboard 60 fans and we'll set it up accordingly.
Until all the details for wiring are
sorted out, we're selling the controller packages completely installed.
The fan leads are extended, leads are carefully positioned along
the chassis, out of the way and secured with cable ties on stick-on
bases--and all the leads connected to the controller. Connections

| COMMENTS:
And this version is the whole enchilada--about the only thing to
add would be the Basic Mods--i.e., the removable top and HD cage
offset for 38mm-thick fans.
If you need a powerful case holding
4 HDs by your desk, this one provides the most complete air circulation
package we've sorted out so far, using five quiet fans. A 4-pot
controller allows independent control of the lower Front intake
fans, the Upper Right 92 intake, the backboard exhaust, and the
Left Side-PCI exhaust. Flowthrough will range from about 300 cfm
at 12v down to about 180cfm or lower at 7v. At 7v, the fan motors
are really undetectable--all you will hear is the white noise of
the moving air.
This package is ideal for those of
you with the 3.+ P4 packages, or even a dual Xeon package with the
appropriate PSU, and requiring a quiet editing workstation that
can also provide increased cooling on burners or HDs when needed.
