CompuCase LX-6A19
OVERVIEW--STOCK CASE
Called the 'D8000' by us until now, this case is the CompucaseLX-6A19. At least one
other company has licensed this chassis (or owns it, or whatever) and
brought it out as their own product in a bronze color, with a door over
the 5.25 bays. We buy it as a "distributor pack" version with
two Globe 120 fans and an AGI/HEC 300w power supply installed.

The LX-6A19 has created a lot of interest because it is seemingly
the case that has it all--all the features a computer enthusiast could
want in a standard midtower case: four 5.25 external bays, easily-removable
cage for two 3.5 external bays, HD 5-bay rack (with rubber mounting
grommets) in the lower front, latches on the left side door, USB 2.0
in the front I/O, pop-open grill for access to the easily-removable
filter--and standard 120 fan mounts in the lower front and in the backboard!
SIZE
- 18.5" High by 8.5" Wide by 18" Deep.
DRIVES
- exposed: four 5.25, two 3.5;
hidden: five 3.5s in lower
front rack..
FAN MOUNTS - Lower Front: one 120 fan mount with clip for 120x25 fan.
Backboard: one 120 fan mount
with clip for 120x25 fan.
FRONT I/O - USB 2.0 only
(opt'l PCB with USB, 1394,
audio in & out if avail.)
Combine these features with a relatively low price, add in
color choices for standard beige and black, accent colors for the latches,
I/O panel cover, and the lower front grille, and for those of you seeking
the most bang for the buck, it hard to beat. The stock black case has come with a blue grill and I/O door,
and the latches have a matching blue accent stripe in them; however,
the latest load came in with black grills installed and the steel blue
accent in the left side latches. (One never knows just what the factory
has shipped until one has the product in one's hot little hands....) Beige
cases have matching beige grills and I/O door. 'Factory pack'
orders will receive whatever color variant is currently available, but
the black panels will be installed for a $5.00 cost, including the panels.
Factory pack cases: the included fans
are two Globe 120x25s, and these are equally feature laden:
they are true variable speed, and have a remote thermistor
One caveat--they also are apparently of typical OEM-qualtiy,
for no MTBF rating is given at the Globe fan site. The included
PSU is an AGI 300w PSU, with a part number of HEC 300AR-T.
This identifies it as the Hirolchi 300w PS, which is the PSU that won
accolades at TomsHardware.com as a 'good-value' PS in their summer 2002
Power Supply article.
The factory pack,
then, provides for the standard case buyer an economical version into
a 'performance' type case. We needed to add a case like this to our
performance case lineup, so we looked at it more closely to see how
cooling could be improved.

MODIFIED
CASES
We "unbundle"
modified cases and sell the Globe fans and AGI/HEC PSU separately. The
modifications bundles follow a logical order that results in a high-performance
case that can be fit to your budget as well as to your system needs.
"M1"
level mods consist of the removal of the factory chassis fan grills,
trimming those punches, and installing grommets.
"M2"
level consists of the M1 mods and adds a right-side 92 mm. intake fan
to the case, and
"M3"
Mods adds a 92 or 120 mm. fan to the left side, by the PCI slots, to
the M2 mods.
For the
'aesthetics' mods, there are two window designs available, and installed
lighting is coming soon.
MODIFICATION
ISSUES: The various storefront packages set up of the case
for neutral to 'positive pressure'--e.g., more intake than exhaust--and
increase airflow throughout the case at any mods level. The main reason
for doing this is to limit dust and dirt because drawn into the case
through every nook and cranny, but it has to be approached carefully--positive
pressure can also create "pockets" of poor circulation. A
120x38 intake fan is usually an easy way to do this, but the LX-6A19
HD cage is close enough to the lower front fan location that installing
a 38mm-thick 120mm fan there is problematic: it can be done, but buyers
have reported that there is no room for either grommets or an inside
fan guard. It is best to stay with 120x25mm fans in the LF.

Increasing
airflow thoughout the case by adding fans: The case itself does
not have a lot of venting built into it elsewhere--like in the backboard
by the PCI slots, in vent holes in the front chassis, or in louvers
stamped into the side panels. The case width and the drive-bay column
lateral location do NOT allow cooling fans to be installed for the 5.25
drive column--but there is room for one or two 92 mm intake
fans, mounted by the 3.5 floppy cage and the 5-bay HD rack. This
location is ideal, for the airflow is disrupted by the cages and disperses
to the back, flowing over the motherboard area. Additional exhaust
venting can be done by the addition of a left-side exhaust fan, mounted
in the back by the PCI slots. (There is room for 50mm fans
in the actual backboard, but that area is impinged by the lower left
latch, and punches for fans smaller than 60 is not generally a cost-efficient
cooling benefit.)
So, while the
optional fan locations are limited, those locations do conform to a
good cooling design--intake towards the front, and exhaust at the back,
with back exhaust at the top as well for more extreme cooling. We do
NOT recommend top blowholes, BTW--those tend to be a good location for
dust or liquids to fall into or be dumped into the case.
FAN SELECTION
ISSUE AND GUIDELINES
For more information
about our approach to providing quiet and powerful cooling, click here.
Three different
fan kits can be used in conjunction with this to match your cooling
objectives--super quiet (JMC and or Panaflo fans at 7v), quiet
(JMC, Panaflo, or Enermax "UC" fans at low speed, 12v
power), and quiet-performance (typically Panaflo low or medium
speed fans at 12v, or the Enermax UC fans at medium or even high speeds).
Using premium-quality
fans at low or medium speeds, then, allows us to set up the case this
way:
With the first
level mods done, achieving positive pressure can be done by running
a higher-speed fan in the lower front, or running the backboard fan
at 7v. With our JMC 120L special low-noise fans, that means that the
intake airflow is about 61 cfm at 12v, and with a JMC 120L at 7v, the
exhaust will be 58+ cfm, including a typical low-speed PS exhaust fan.
Adding the right
side-middle 92 intake fan means one can easily set up the case for positive
pressure and provide intake air that is deflected into the upper motherboard
area, over the memory and towards the CPU/HS/HS fan areas. Using a JMC120L
and Panaflo 92L1A fan for intakes, at 12 v the intake is about 103 cfm
and the exhaust will be about 93 cfm if one uses a Panaflo120L1A in
the backboard 120 mount. At 7v, the total flowthrough will be approximately
140 cfm, and the fans are nearly silent--all you can hear is the white
noise of the moving air.
Adding a left-side
92 exhaust fan just above the lower latch now provides good exhaust
for any hot cards you may have installed. It provides complete airflow
throughout the lower two-thirds of the case, and provides comprehensive
cooling everywhere except directly on the 5.25 drives. Note that with
positive pressure, you will get air movement in this area if a bay is
empty and there are gaps around your devices--and that the air will
be blowing out, rather than sucking (dust) in.

FAN CONTROL:
The benefits of having easily-adjusted airflow cannot be overstated.
A controller allows one to tweak the airflow to meet current processing
needs, as well as adjust for user noise preference. So far, we've seen
no "automatic" controllers that are useful, BTW--they simply
don't respond appropriately.
Adding a fan
controller can be done at any modifications level--for level 1 configurations,
we generally recommend the Enermax A03-FATR2 (3.5"/2-pot) controller.
That unit works perfectly with the Globe (OEM) fans--but one does have
to disable the fan speed readings in the LCD readout with 2-wire fans
like the Panaflos or JMCs. For
the fan configurations with three or more fans, we use the Mitron 3.5"/4-pot
controller. If One desires a 5.25 bay controller, several are available,
but we will probably promote the Mitron 3-pot control that controls
two fans per pot and has two on-off switches as well.
AESTHETICS

WINDOWS:
two or three versions--coming soon!
Window 1:
A rectangular window (nominally 9"w. x12"h.) that
extends from the PSU bottom down to the latch bottom, 'doglegging' around
the lower left latch. The width extends from the nominal forward edge
of the backboard 120 fan to the back edge of the HD and floppy cages.
Window 1 is available
as the 'A' version, with no fan provision, and as the 'B' version (shown)
, which clears a 90 fan mount
Window 2:
a simple 9"
dia. round window.
Both versions offer
good locations for installation of concealed lighting at the top or
bottom.

- punch the Lower Front or Backboard
120 chassis grills, drill direct fan mounting holes, trim punches
with u-channel polymer edging:. $10.00 ea.
- overdrill fan mounting holes,
install grommets: $3.00 ea. fan mount.
- punch a second intake fan,
92 mm., in right side-middle fan location, drill mtg. holes, trim:
$10.00 ea.
- add a second exhaust fan,
92mm, in left side panel, above lower latch, drill mtg. holes, trim:
$10.00
- if a second right side fan
is installed, then make the LS-PCI exhaust fan a 120mm.
- At buyer's request, install
a 92 or 120 blowhole in the top. Such installations may disable the
use of a full form-factor 5.25 device there, and we do NOT recommend
such an installation.
With the supplemental fan locations
sorted out, we then created "levels" of performance modifications.
Basically, there are three levels for this case, and we've got aesthetic
modifications coming up--e.g., three different left side windows, and
eventually, installed case lighting. Until those are ready to go, here's
the current (September '03) LX-6A19 modifications groupings:
Mods 1: Remove
factory fan clips; punch the Lower Front 120 fan mount chassis grill,
punch the Backboard 120 fan mount chassis grill, drill fan mounting
holes, and overdrill and install fan mounting grommets.
Mods 2A: to
the Mods 1 package, add a 92 fan mount on the right side, middle location
by punching the panel, drilling mounting holes, and installing grommets.
Mods 2B: to
the Mods 1 package, add a 92 fan mount on the right side, lower location
by punching the panel, drilling mounting holes, and installing grommets.
Mods 3A: to
the Mods 2A package, add a left side 92 exhaust fan, mounted just above
the left side lower latch, drill mounting holes and overdrill and install
grommets, etc.,
Mod 3B: to
Mods 2A and 2B, add a left-side-PCI 120 exhaust fan, complete with mounting
grommets.

| COMMENTS: As a factory
pack this configuration represents very good value--the AGI
/ HEC PS is the one that was highly recommended in the later summer
'02 PS review at tomshardware.com, and the fans should provide
good cooling if not necessarily a positive pressure setup. |

120 chassis grills punched, trimmed, and mounting grommets; Globe
(factory) fans reinstalled with fan accs. |
| COMMENTS: This is the
starting point--mods level one, with the factory fans reinstalled.
The Lower Front and Backboard chassis grills are punched, fan
mounting holes drilled, u-channel punch trim installed, and
grommets installed in overdrilled fan mounting holes. When the
factory fans are reinstalled, chrome fan guards are added to
the lower front fan on the inside and on the outside and inside
of the backboard fan.
This version is ideal for the buyer
who already owns his own PS and and wants to save money on fans--
note that the Lower Front fan mount can only take a 120x38 fan
if one forgoes grommet mounting and an inside fan guard. |

| COMMENTS: This configuration
of a Mods1 case adds the very-quiet JMC 120x25 fan we can get--at
12 v, it is rated as 61cfm at 26 dBA. However, we set it
up with the backboard JMC at 7v, which allows the case to run
with a bit of positive pressure if the PS fan is a typical low-speed
fan (about 22-23 cfm). With this setup, the intake is about
61 cfm and the exhaust is about 58, for a flowthrough of approximately
119 cfm--and it's done with some of the quietest fans available. |

at the medium speeds they will be louder, but they also produce
more flow. |

COMMENTS: These Enermax
fans have a manual speed adjustment AND a remote thermistor,
and this configuration adds the Enermax 3.5"/2-pot fan
controller to them. This setup gives you two different ways
to tweak the setup: if the manual control is set for low speed,
the controller will run the fans lower as well. So, set the
lower front fan for "medium" speed and then dial it
down make it quieter and still have positive pressure.
The controller is installed, and
the fans are wired to it, with the leads neatly tied off and
located in a 'detail-wiring' manner. The controller not only
reports fan speed for both fans, but allows setting alarms for
no or low-speed dropoff.
When we experimented with these
fans in the spring of '02, we found that at low speed their
sound was virtually identical to the JMC and Panaflo fans--obviously,
at the medium speeds they will be louder, but they also produce
more flow. Adding an Enermax controller gives you a flexible
configuration. |

"BAREBONES"-- MODS
1, plus a right side-mid level 92 punch, trim & grommets;
NO fans and NO fan guards. |
COMMENTS: Adding the right
side-middle intake fan mount is probably the most important
"upgrade" for increased cooling performance in this
case. It provides for much better airflow, dispersing air throughout
the motherboard area but particularly at the memory- CPU-HS-HS
fan area. We're able to regularly offer a barebones package
for this configuration now--so if you want one, you can now
get it on-line.
The Right-side filter detail varies
slightly, depending on the case color: For the beige cases,
a chrome fan guard is installed on the outside, the metal mesh
filter in installed inside, next to the panel, and another chrome
fan guard is installed on the inside of the fan. For the
black case, a black plastic mesh filter is installed on the
outside. The beige detail still allows vacuum cleaning
of the filter, but will require disassembly for washing. The
black detail allows easy filter cleaning by snapping off the
cover for filter access, or by vacuuming. If you prefer the
chrome guard detail on the black case, just put a note in the
'comments' field during the ordering process. We'll adjust the
invoice accordingly. |

fans, fan accessories.
RECOMMENDED CONFIGURATION-- |
COMMENTS: Adding the right
side-middle intake fan mount is probably the most important
"upgrade" for good cooling performance in this case.
It provides for much better airflow, dispersing air throughout
the motherboard area but particularly at the memory- CPU-HS-HS
fan area.
The fan configuration here uses
a combination of JMC and Panaflo fans--and it's available in
either a 12-v or 7v configuration. (Just specify which version
you want in the comments section in the on-line ordering, but
note that 7v. versions are powered off PS (4-pin) connections.
At 12v, the intake airflow is about 100 cfm, and the exhaust
is about 91 cfm. At 7v, the intake airflow is about 62 cfm,
and the exhaust is about the same, all with the fans running
at nearly inaudible levels.
The Right-side filter detail varies
slightly, depending on the case color: For the beige cases,
a chrome fan guard is installed on the outside, the metal mesh
filter is installed inside between the case and the fan, and
another chrome fan guard is installed on the inside of the fan.
For the black case, a black plastic mesh filter is installed
on the outside. The beige detail still allows vacuum cleaning
of the filter, but may require disassembly for thorough cleaning.
The black detail allows easy filter cleaning by snapping
off the cover for filter access, or by vacuuming. If you prefer
the chrome guard detail on the black case, just put a notes
in the 'comments' field during the ordering process. |

COMMENTS: The
best of all worlds! The four-pot controller allows each
fan to be adjusted--but equally important, you can now have
the benefit of high airflow when you need it, or low and much
quieter operation at other times.
We've been working our way to this
kind of offering for some time now, making it available to interested
buyers while we sort out the details. This is a
complete and detail-wired installation: leads
are run from each fan similar to the traces on a PCB, and secured
at numerous locations with stick-on cable ties, then routed
to the controller. fan or controller connectors are soldered
on as needed, and color-matched shrinkwrap is used to protect
all soldered connections.
All connections except for the optional
CPU fan hookup are made--that's for you to decide to use. Since
the stick-on cable tie bases allow replacement or additional
cable ties to be placed, this wiring harness provides and excellent
beginning to you building a fully-detailed system.
